  • 4 small sweet or yellow onions
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk ranch dip

Instructions
 

  • Peel the onions, trim, and cut into flower-like segments.
  • Whisk flour, cornstarch, and seasonings in one bowl; whisk eggs and buttermilk in another.
  • Dip onions in flour, then egg-buttermilk mixture, then flour again.
  • Fry at 350°F (175°C) for 3–4 minutes until golden brown.
  • Serve hot with buttermilk ranch dip.

Notes

For extra crunch, double coat in flour; place on wire rack after frying to stay crispy.
