With simple pantry staples, you’ll have warm rolls ready to serve, just like at the restaurant. Ingredients

1 cup warm whole milk

2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast

¼ cup granulated sugar

3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

1 large egg

3½ cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons melted butter for brushing

Instructions

1. Warm the milk to about 110°F and stir in sugar. Sprinkle yeast on top and let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

2. Add melted butter, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix to combine.

3. Gradually add flour, mixing until the dough is soft and tacky.

4. Knead for 5–7 minutes by hand or with a dough hook.

5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

6. Punch down the dough and roll it to ½-inch thickness. Cut into squares or rounds.

7. Arrange on a greased baking sheet and let rise again for 30–40 minutes.

8. Bake at 350°F for 15–18 minutes or until golden brown.

9. Brush the tops with melted butter and serve warm.

Notes

Use warm—not hot—milk to keep the yeast active.

You can freeze baked rolls and reheat when needed.
