Ingredients
2.5 pounds Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup whole milk
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1 teaspoon salt
0.5 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
2. Peel and thinly slice the potatoes using a mandoline or sharp knife.
3. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add garlic and sauté for 1 minute.
4. Whisk in the flour and cook for another minute to make a roux.
5. Slowly whisk in the cream and milk, stirring until slightly thickened.
6. Add cheddar, Gruyère, and mozzarella cheeses. Stir until melted and smooth.
7. Season the sauce with salt and pepper.
8. Layer half the potatoes in the baking dish. Pour half the cheese sauce over them.
9. Repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce, spreading evenly.
10. Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
11. Uncover and bake for 20–25 minutes more, until the top is golden and bubbly.
12. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve warm.
Notes
For best texture, slice the potatoes uniformly and don’t rinse them—this keeps the natural starch intact for a creamier bake.
Let the dish sit for 10 minutes after baking to help it set before serving.
