Ingredients

2 pounds potatoes, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 ½ cups whole milk

½ cup heavy cream

2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

1 tablespoon chopped parsley (optional, for garnish)


Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

2. Peel and slice the potatoes thinly, about 1/8-inch thick.

3. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté until fragrant.

4. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, creating a roux.

5. Gradually whisk in milk and cream until the mixture is smooth and thickened slightly.

6. Add shredded cheddar cheese and stir until melted. Season with salt and pepper.

7. Layer half the sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over them.

8. Repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce.

9. Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes.

10. Uncover and bake for another 20-25 minutes, until golden and bubbly.

11. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley if desired.

Notes

For extra cheesy flavor, mix in Gruyère or Parmesan with the cheddar.
